How Does My Website get a name?

All web sites typically have a name. In reality your website is an IP address like your street address which is a set of numbers. Your domain or web name is really just a pointer to your web address. It is much easier for people to look up names than a random set of numbers. If you want people to remember your site, you will want to register a catchy name that represents what your website is about. You will have to register your Domain name through a domain name registrar site. This site will check to make sure no one else has registered that same name. You will need to register your name and pay an annual fee to use this name. It should run you $2.00-$20.00 for the year. The registrar’s office will usually notify you when your domain name comes up for renewal. If you go past your renewal date, someone can register their site under that same name.

Your web hosting company may be able to set this up for you, just tell them what name you would like and they will arrange that that address will go to your site at their company. If you already have a domain name and need to transfer it, your hoisting company can have the domain name transferred to the server your site is on. If you prefer to do ythe transfer yourself, contact the company where you registered your name and give them the web hosting companies Nameserver address. If your site is not ready to be on the World Wide Web just yet, you may pay for your name before hand and that will ensure that the name will be there for you when you are ready to transfer it either to a web hosting company or your own server.
